Smith Custom Pickups reviewed in Guitar Player magazine

OK, so it is really Smit’s Handwound Guitar Pickups (SHGP) available through smitspickups.com, not Smith Custom Pickups.  But since the article was about a guitar comparison and not directly a pickup comparison, then this is just a small oversight.  The bottom line is that while checking out the Guitar Mill custom Tele (with handwound pickups from Kevin Smith) and comparing the axe to a Hahn (with Lindy Fralin pickups), the reviewers at Guitar Player magazine picked up on exactly the aspects of tone that led Kevin Smith to wind his own pickups.

On page 128 of the March edition of Guitar Player, the tone of the guitar with Smit’s pickups was described as “…snappy attack, bright cutting tonality…”  “…and retains decent string to string clarity within chords…”  For years, I’ve listened to Kevin’s desire for “clear” and “glassy” and “jangly” tones that were still full and musical.  Now that he’s winding his own pickups, it is no surprise that his take on ideal guitar tone is apparent to other players checking out guitars with his scatterwound pickups.  Smit’s Pickups are a great choice for custom axes like the Guitar Mill custom shop T-style or juicing the tone in a humble axe like my Fernandez strat.
